Hypothyroidism is a metabolism disorder. When the thyroid gland is unable to make the significant amount of thyroid hormones T3 & T4 then the condition arises as hypothyroidism.
Thyroid hormones are very important in regulating the body's metabolic rate, they help to extract the energy from the food. Here's how hypothyroidism can influence metabolism:
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):
Thyroid hormones, particularly thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), It influence the basal metabolic rate (BMR). BMR represents the amount of energy the body requires at rest to maintain basic physiological functions, such as breathing, circulation, and temperature regulation. In hypothyroidism, a decrease in thyroid hormone levels can affect the body's capability to convert food into energy and use it for activity. and the person feels fatigued, low in energy, and cold intolerance. This leads to gain weight because the food is converted into fat cells instead of energy.
This slows down the metabolism in the body and is also responsible for making you prone to many other diseases like hormone imbalance, type 2 diabetes, Obesity, and many more if it is not taken seriously. In people with hypothyroidism, if they have too little amount of thyroid hormones in their blood, the condition could get worse and can cause autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's thyroiditis which could lead to radiation therapy or surgical removal of thyroids.
Drinking beverages like aerated drinks, coffee, and tea needs to be avoided. Outside food and ultra-processed foods also need to be avoided.
When the condition is autoimmune need to take care of gluten and casein-restricted food. Because casein and gluten act as an antigen(foreign) in the body the body's immune system attacks the body's organs.
Autoimmune: Autoimmune is the condition when the body's own immune system mistakes and attacks its own body's organs or healthy tissues as thinking is foreign to its own body.
"Females are more prone to hypothyroidism than men."
What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism:
Sudden unexplained weight gain
Joint pain
Muscle cramps and Muscle weakness
Being cold sensitive
Depression and brain fog
Constipation
Dietary protocol for hypothyroid :
People with hypothyroidism need to avoid soya and soya products and goitrogenic foods. Also need to avoid Uncooked cruciferous vegetables like Cauliflower, broccoli, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, etc. These foods contain goitrogens which disrupt the production of thyroid hormones.
If they like to eat this cruciferous vegetable they can cook this vegetable and can have it in controlled portions. Cooking cruciferous vegetables destroys the goitrogens in foods.
Foods Good for thyroids:
Need to include iodine-rich food which includes seafood fish, chicken, egg, iodized salt, and Selenium, and zinc-rich food like Brazil nuts, baked beans, oats, and wheatgrass juice.
